I wish I could take you out for coffee, chit-chat, and let you know just how much we as small business owners need a paper planner. Since we are both busy and in different locations, I’ll just share how I absolutely need my small business planner, and how it has saved me throughout the years.
I know some brand new small business owners, and they depend solely on their digital calendars to keep them afloat. My honest, first-hand experience is that you also need an actual paper planner to keep your business on track and running smoothly. You need a planner that you could jot down ideas in—in a moment’s notice, and write down meeting recaps or follow up actions, and just about anything else that you need to remember and plan during your busy business day.
Despite us living in the days of remarkable digital calendars with electronic invite capabilities and meeting reminders, pen and paper in a composition notebook has served me and my business very well over the years.
It may sound cliché, but I am convinced that using a pen to take notes helps me to remember my appointments, reminders, and to-do lists easily. I just write, and it is somehow stored somewhere in the back of my brain. I could not, for the life of me, remember an appointment I will have two weeks from now in my digital calendar. They actually need automatic reminders and notifications, because people like me will be oblivious to what we have scheduled.
Taking more detailed notes in my pen and paper planner just comes naturally to me. Logging my meetings and lists on my digital tools leave room for error that I cannot afford as a business owner. I once set-up a meeting with a client over the phone, but did not jot it down in my planner.
Lo and behold, I used the wrong date on my digital calendar to log in my meeting. Yes, I missed my appointment. Yes, I need (and needed) my planner. I still coordinate my appointments through Google Calendar, but only after they are already in my planner.
You clearly now know my stance on using a planner; if not instead of, then alongside your digital calendar. I would have to admit that finding the perfect planner for me wasn’t easy. I have actually struggled to find the perfect planner for a long time. Thankfully, this year I found the Kate Spade planner and I have honestly finally found a planner I love.
Small Business Planner Styles
The Kate Spade Planner is a linear horizontal planner that is chic, but fun. The horizontal style allows room in the calendar for writing long tasks. You literally can split the daily planning space into 2 and still have enough room to write your tasks. I need to write notes when talking to clients; if I don’t write it down right away, I will forget.
Additionally, the room available on the Kate Spade Planner is exactly what the doctor ordered for a person who values attention to detail and order. You have ample space to write all the specifics of a meeting and task.
The planners feature a concealed spiral cover, laminated tabs, monthly & weekly spreads, pages for holidays & celebrations, blank note pages, and a pocket for any loose papers you may have or business cards.
The planners fit in most medium and large size purses, and the regular planners weigh about 1.04 lbs. There are 15 pages for notes, along with two pages of notes per month. These leave ample room for note taking throughout the year. The planners previously ran for 18 months (August to December). However, they no longer do that and now run for 13 months, August to August.
The Kate Spade Planners also have awesome themed covers. The Floral planner is a fresh pick for those who love a lively and colorful feel to your day. The Spotty Dot planner gives a classy feel, while the Things We Love Planner highlights shoes and accessories for any fashionable business woman.
My favorite is the Golden Floral planner. It is white and prone to blemishes, but I have always loved gold and how it represents what we are worth–regardless of how our business is going at the time.
To Refill or Not To Refill–That is The Question
I personally prefer non-refillable planners because I file away all my old planners. I tend to refer back to them over the years as necessary. A new planner also gives me a fresh start for the New Year. There really is something about a new planner that can get you super motivated to get to business for your business.
Other Kate Spade Planners come with refillable options for you to purchase separately. You keep the planner cover you love, and refill the pages as needed. Kate Spade also has a refill pack which includes note pages, 10 paper tape strips, 12 round paper tape stickers, 2 magnetic bookmarks, and 50 tabbed sticky notes. It looks pretty cool and handy, especially because I love the gold stickers.
Is it Affordable?
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Having a small business makes you aware of every budget item, every business expense. You second guess every purchase to make sure it is indeed a necessity. Whether you are an army of one or have a few rock stars in your team, budget conscious spending is a must. Luckily, Kate Spade Planners are surprisingly affordable. It is a once a year investment for a tool that will keep you organized and help you build your business. In the grand scheme of things, that is priceless.
Regular planner prices can vary, depending on quality. You can find a planner for $10 at your neighborhood convenient store or you can splurge on a $100 planner at Nordstrom. Kate Spade Planners range from about $26 for a medium sized planner to about $42 for a large sized planner. No other planner can give you the unique feel of Kate Spade’s Planners. Let me tell you why.
Yes, I Like Planner Extras
Kate Spade Planners are full of motivational sayings to brighten your day. You will find little quotes to boost your spirits or give you a little chuckle. Each month has a monthly divider that has a fun word and definition. On those chaotic days with meeting after meeting, deadline after deadline, these quotes will be just what you need to lighten your perspective.
Stickers. If you didn’t know your personal and professional life needed stickers, well now you know. Once you have a Kate Spade Planner with its golden foil stickers, it would be hard to ever go back to a regular run-of-the-mill planner. Most Kate Spade planners have a sheet of gold foil stickers to remind you of everything from meetings to long weekends or date nights. They are cute, fun, and break up the monotony of scheduled meetings and project due dates.
Kate Spade Planners come with a customizable charm ring which I LOVE. Adorable customized charms are also available that you could buy separately to personalize your planner. Kate Spade makes sure that each colorful message to clip on your planner adds a bit of direction (with a wink) to your day.
Whether you are contemplating on splitting your organizational tools into a digital calendar/paper planner combo or whether you are just looking for a planner that actually works, Kate Spade Planners are hands-down the best tool for small business entrepreneurs.
